200 love letters found from World War II

Love stories never end and here is some sweet proof of that. An employee of a recycling facility in France accidentally discovered 200 love letters from World War II in Saint-Jean-d’Angély, on the West Coast.

Cécile, a lawyer in environmental law, explained that a man buried a box with letters under dozens of newspapers from the 1960s and 1970s. They were addressed to the same person, Aimée, a resident of the small town Loubillé, not far from the recycling centre, according to a local radio.

The lawyer then went on a quest on social media to find Aimée's traces and wrote on Twitter: “I work in a waste reception centre and a man came to bring us a box full of letters addressed to a certain Aimée Randonnet. Help me find her children/grandchildren. I don't want this to go in the trash."

Her message went viral and was shared more than 20,000 times, which help her to track down Aimée's family. She found out that the old woman died in 2014 at 86 years old, and her great-nephew wrote to her and put her in contact with Aimée's daughter. Claudine, 65 years old, said the letters were written by her father Pierre, when he went to the war between 1939 and 1945.

The house were the old woman lived had been sold a while ago and a box was probably forgotten there. The new owner had emptied the attic and probably threw everything in the bin.

How do you feel about this story?

Do you know if your family kept some lost treasures from ancestors, like those letters?

What would you have done if you had found the letters yourself?

It is always so nice to read something so uplifting, especially in these difficult times. My uncle sold all my grandmother's belongings when she passed away, I don't even know what happened to all her old coins, pictures and lost treasures. I think I would have done the same if it was me, found the family who it belonged to so that it can stay with them where it belongs.

One wonders then, was it the new home owners that took the box of letters to be recycled as paper waste? Why would the family not have checked what was in the attic? Not much adventurous family I'd think.
I keep some of my late father's WWII memories and some of them are also postcards his eldest brother had who had a sweetheart in Italy, beautiful young lady, he had photographs of them printed and those were send as post cards from Italy where he was.
I think poverty was the cause why the two of them didn't splice when the war was over. It was a long, terrible war and families in South Africa had to survive from basics. And dad had 8 siblings at the time, 6 of them girls.

It's a very emotional story. I would have felt great founding those letters and share my experience with family and friends, and also media if I have to. Well I don't know any of the treasures that my family is keeping so far from ancestors, otherwise I would have known about them..
