90,000 cases and 74 deaths on the weekend: Why aren't we talking about COVID-19 anymore?

This week Australia became a world leader.

We have gained the unwelcome title of the world's most Covid-infected country, leading the world in per-capita COVID infections.

We recorded 90,000 cases and 74 deaths - just on this weekend alone.

We now have so many cases, no restrictions, and the Prime Minister said, on this deadly weekend "now that the pandemic is behind us, we can focus on economic recovery."

The pandemic is certainly not behind us. It is the worst it has been anywhere in the entire world, for the entire period of the pandemic, and it's right here in Australia.

Why do you think it is being ignored and not talked about anymore?

People are sick to death of the governments having control over what goes into our bodies and control over our movements. They had 2 years to get it right and we are at worse case numbers than ever....that is because they opened the country up again to international arrivals. On a brighter note, my husband and son have both just had covid. They both said it was like a head cold for 3 days. They managed it fine. The strains are weakening. I know more people with adverse reactions to the vaccinations than those who have long covid. Put simply, covid is just not as bad as the media and their scaremongering would have you believe. You are at more risk from the mRNA vaccinations than the risk of covid complications Ответить

Well we would have to ask the various State governments that question. They have controlled this situation, brought in lockdowns and border stoppages and the Federal government was unable to stop it because of the way the constitution is written. The local state governments don't want to talk about it, so that is why everything has gone quiet. Ответить

I am petrified for my daughter and son. Also myself but to a lesser extent. I think it’s inevitable that I will contract COVID so it’s just a scary waiting game. There will be variant after variant. We can only hope they’re less severe. Ответить

I don't understand it either Sampler, I always thought the total lifting of restrictions was crazy and these figures prove it. I am more cautious now than I have ever been. I think it is being swept under the carpet for the sake of business and the mighty dollar. Ответить

Let that sink in for a second - we are the world's most infected country. 90,000 people were infected on the weekend. 74 people died of it.
This is a national disgrace. A health crisis worse than any other we have ever faced, and yet, the pandemic is barely getting a mention anymore. Masks are no longer mandated, close contacts no longer need to isolate - Scott Morrison implemented a "let her rip" approach to Covid that is causing illness and death.
As of 3pm on 09 May 2022, a total of 6,282,370 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Australia, including 7,516 deaths, and approximately 338,679 active cases.
Our hospitals are at capacity. Here, in Melbourne, press releases are issued every night urging people not to attend hospital emergency rooms because they are overloaded and cannot accept any more people, ambulances are ramped, and top doctors are quitting because they don't agree with the crisis that the governments have let them get into.
I simply don't understand how this is being allowed to happen so freely in our country.
